Restoration project at the old industrial port Hullkajen, Malmö
project in groups | 4 weeks | term 8, spr. 2022
A preschool that introduces a new public function to Malmö’s former industrial port, blending playful design with the site’s modern industrial heritage and creating a seamless connection between learning, play, and the waterfront.
Located on Hullkajen in Malmö’s former industrial port, Algea Preschool introduces a fresh function while celebrating the area’s industrial character. Inspired by the robust forms and mint-green palette of nearby silos, the building is organized across two levels: the lower floor for younger children and the upper for older children. Its modest height creates an approachable scale, complemented by a large mural linking the school to its surroundings. Bright, open interiors and an organic courtyard that extends into a playful waterfront promenade foster curiosity, creativity, and learning.
My role:
Working in a group of three, I contributed to concept development, spatial organization, and façade design. I focused on translating industrial references into a child-friendly architectural language and helped shape the visual identity, including color palette and mural concept. I also assisted in producing drawings, 3D models, and visualizations to communicate both the design and the atmosphere of the preschool.
Quay Promenade and Playground
The quay promenade features soft, organic forms and green spaces with seating and sea views. The preschool playground mirrors this approach, using flowing shapes to encourage movement and exploration. Resilient coastal vegetation withstands wind and saltwater.

Landscape Detail – Hullkajen Waterfront
A close-up of the waterfront shows alternating smooth paving for accessibility and textured cobblestones. Circular rubber surfacing forms gentle waves, echoing the sea and adding color. Trees, planted areas, playful water features and seating create a lively, inviting public space that blends function and character.
